White Bronze Headstone

The "white bronze" headstone of Grandpa James Kennard is located in the Methodist Church Cemetery in (New) Mount Pleasant, Vinton County, Ohio. The stone really is made of zinc, not bronze -- that was a just a sales gimmick back in the day -- and shows no sign of wear.

Nearby are headstones for LH-II's Aunt Harriet and Uncle John Wesley, both of whom stayed in Ohio after his dad went west with the Mormons.

The Methodist church, shown on the bottom left of
this  map from 1876, sits at the top of a significant
hill with the cemetery on the west side. LH-II's
grandfather's headstone is easily located in
the small cemetery.

Wait, where is this?

Incidentally, there are two Mount Pleasants in Ohio. This Mount Pleasant, identified on early maps as New Mount Pleasant, is located exactly on the county line, with half the town in Hocking County and the other in Vinton County. The church and cemetery are located on the Vinton County side.

James Kennard's son was Leonidas Hamlin Kennard, who went west with the Mormons. His son is LH Kennard Jr. who is pictured in the photo at the top of this page. LH Kennard Jr.'s children are John Gleason Kennard, Franklin James Kennard, Gordon Keith Kennard, Marguerite Kennard, Joanna Kennard, Varua Kennard, Leonidus "Lon" H. Kennard III, Esther Kennard, Geneva Kennard.

Kennard Sisters May (Mary), Josie (Joanna), Claire (Clara),
Kate, Angie, Helen, Viola, Teresa, Cecil.

The daughters

These are all daughters of Leonidas Hamlin Kennard I. That's right, LH and Jim had 11 sisters, nine are shown here. Geneological research tell us LH-I had 13 children, including 11 daughters. His children were LH-II, Desdamona (died as an infant), Mary Elizabeth, Geneva (died at age 7), Joanna Louisa, Clara Maria, James, Kate, Angie, Helen, Viola, Teresa and Cecil. The back of the photo reads: "Kennard Sisters May, Josie, Claire, Kate, Angie, Helen, Viola, Teresa, Cecil."

Here's the whole family together. Papa (LH-I) is in the center with his surviving children. Sons Jim and Lon are in suits on the back row. This picture comes from "They Came Before Me."

Papa (LH-I) swimming with some of the girls. Not sure when or where. And who's taking the picture?

The back of the photo reads: "Leonidas H. Kennard, Claire K. Matsen, Viola K Burton, Martha E.T.L. Kennard, Rhea M. Kennard, Cecil K. (Bigalow)"

Stuff not in the obituary

> LH-II served two missions in the Society Islands in Tahiti, the second time as mission president.
> He was an officiator in the Logan Temple for 23 years.

Talk about guts: Imagine asking this man for his daughter's hand

Leonidas Hamlin Kennard II's father, Leonidas Hamlin Kennard, married Joanna Louisa Gleason. Joanna was the daughter of John Streator Gleason and Desdemona Chase. John Streator and Desdemona lived in a small two-story brick house in Nauvoo that still stands today. The home is on the south east corner of North Gordon Street and Young Street, about seven blocks east of the LDS Temple. FIND IT HERE.

Here is a short excerpt from a letter he wrote about his time in Nauvoo with the LDS Prophet Joseph Smith: "“My dear brother the scenes through which I have been called to pass since I arrived at this place from the East has almost alienated me from my country, almost one continual round of mobocracy by night and by day. When I contemplate the scene it almost makes me shudder and my blood run cold in my veins. I have been an eye witness to almost the whole scene from the beginning. My life has been exposed and threatened from time to time by the mob and once went into their camp when they were filled with wrath and came at me to destroy me. It was about a week before the assassination of the Prophets Joseph and Hyrum Smith. They was arrested and marched to jail by a band of the desperados and could not even lay there in peace. They was aroused about 12 o’clock by a rush of men into the yard and a loud rattling and halooing at the door of the jail. One of our men went down and opened the door, when they rushed up stairs and caroused there awhile and left us. There were 12 of us in number but we had mostly been divested of our arms. I had secreted a brace of pistols about me and got them with me in the jail. I however did not think proper to use them on that occasion. They did not lay their hands on us but took every course they could to terrify us, but I reckon they did not make out much. When they showed their bowe knives to us, I showed them my pistols and what other arms we had with us. If I could see you I could tell you all about it, but cannot now commit to paper suffice it to say that I was liberated. Last fall I was out also among them four or five weeks. They are still threatening us on every hand. You have undoubtedly heard before this of our emigrating expedition. I expect to leave about the first of March if we are permitted. Some of our persecutors say we shan’t go and some say we shall but we will do about as we are amind to." SOURCE
